Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Skyscrapers, desert and the Arabian Gulf

Dubai combines record-breaking architecture with desert landscapes, beaches and traditional souks. It suits families, couples and groups of friends, with modern hotels, large malls and many indoor attractions for the hottest months.

Top attractions

  • Burj Khalifa: At 828 metres, it was the world's tallest building when it opened in 2010. Observation decks look out over the city, the desert and the sea.
  • Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain: A huge shopping and entertainment centre beside the choreographed fountain shows at the foot of Burj Khalifa.
  • Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood: Restored lanes of traditional houses with wind towers, galleries and small museums near Dubai Creek.
  • Dubai Creek and the souks: Cross the creek by abra, the traditional wooden water taxi, to the gold and spice souks of Deira.
  • Palm Jumeirah: A palm-shaped artificial island lined with resorts, beaches and waterfront restaurants.

Things to do

  • Desert safari: Dune drives, sunset views and evening camps in the desert outside the city.
  • Beaches: Relax on public beaches or at resort beach clubs along the coast.
  • Theme parks and attractions: Indoor and outdoor parks and attractions that suit families.
  • Dining: From Emirati dishes to international restaurants and waterfront cafés.

A little history

Dubai grew from a small fishing and pearl-diving settlement on Dubai Creek. In 1833 members of the Al Maktoum family settled there, and the family has ruled Dubai ever since. The creek made the town a busy trading port.

Oil was discovered in 1966, and in 1971 Dubai became one of the founding emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Since then it has grown into an international centre for trade, aviation and tourism.
